Sketch Fury Challenge No. 7: Daenerys Targaryen vs Kitty Pryde

About the Challenge

HushPuppyKirbyI know, I know … I’m posting this a bit late, a day past the Friday at 9:00 am sketch challenge deadline. No excuses, I will try to be better about this.

I have to admit, having a new fur kid is taking up a lot of our time. I forgot how much work it was to have a dog; even if it had been less than a year since our 16-year old Kozzy-girl left this world. However, there is a VAST difference between an aged dog and a 1 (-ish) year old pup. Kozzy was slow and deliberate these past few years, so having an energetic young’in around us is tiring!

I shouldn’t complain though. After all, how can I resist this face?

This week, I decided to do something a little different. Perhaps it’s because I’m growing weary of issuing Marvel vs. DC challenges. Or perhaps I’m wanting you all to stretch your imaginations a bit. In any case, this week I am asking you to sketch either Daenerys Targaryan or Kitty Pryde. However, there is a catch (also known in a previous incarnation as a “Commissioner Proviso”). With this challenge, I’m requesting that you either sketch Daenerys with her “sons” Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion OR Kitty Pryde with Lockheed (the *actual* dragon and not the X-Men’s Blackbird jet).

I chose Daenerys from the Game of Thrones series because I really really like this character. (And before you say anything … yes, there IS a Game of Thrones comic out there. So yes, I am allowed to request a sketch of her.) She is well-spoken and polite; but filled with a quiet determination. She is sometimes naive, but is very intelligent and quick to understand.

Daenerys had been raised in exile with her older brother who was often ruthless and dominating over her which had made her empathetic to those she perceives as downtrodden and oppressed. Years of mental and physical abuse at the hands of her brother have caused her to be ruthless against those who suppress or torment others. That, in turn has lead her to be idealistic to a fault.

As a wedding gift (from an arranged union which included an army as a dowry), Daenerys received three dragon eggs that had turned to stone by the “passage of time.” After losing her husband and her stillborn son, she set the three eggs on top of the funeral pyre, lit the fire and then stepped into the flames herself. The next morning, Daenerys was found among the ashes holding three baby dragons — her “children” — of which Westeros had not seen in over a century.

“I did [swear you safe conduct], but my dragons made no promises. And you threatened their mother.” — Daenerys Targaryen

Katherine “Kitty” Pryde has got to be one of my favorite X-Men characters. I have to admit that it likely had to do with the whole Katya & Colossus romance storyline; it was just very … sweet. And then throw in the whole Legacy Virus with Colossus’ sister, Illyana (who was very close with Kitty)? Yeah, I was hooked.

Another thing about Kitty appealed to me was the fact that she was Jewish. It’s known that her paternal grandfather, Samuel Prydeman, was a survivor of the Nazi Holocaust. Based on the shortening of her surname, I would surmise that her family had changed their name in order to hide the fact that they were of Jewish-descent. I’d like to think that this is where Kitty gets her sense of fighting for the underdog; for empathizing with those that have been oppressed. This, of course, plays an important factor once she discovers her mutant abilities and especially the stigma that’s associated by being a mutant.

So Kitty also has a sidekick; a dragon she named Lockheed after the type of jet the X-Men use. (Unknown fact — at least to me, anyway — the X-Jet, Blackbird was actually nicknamed “Kitty’s Dragon.”) Kitty first makes up a bedtime story that included a dragon named “Lockheed” to tell a young Illyana. But while kidnapped in outer space, Kitty met a cat-sized purple dragon that resembled the creature from her fairy tale. Naming him Lockheed, this dragon ends up saving her and the other X-Men and eventually travels to Earth becoming Kitty’s longtime companion and protector, of which she shares a psychic bond.

“Lockheed! You found me! You are the best X-Dragon ever.” — Kitty Pryde

That’s the challenge this week, my dear friends. Now, as this is posted late … I would think it fair to give you an extra day to complete your sketch. So … instead of being submitted on Friday, August 29th at 9:00 am, your sketch will be due on Saturday at 9:00 am.

Daenerys Targaryen or Kitty Pryde.

Must include at least one dragon.
